ALABAMA REPUBLICANS APPLAUD GOP LEADERSHIP’S RECOMMENDATION OF PARKER GRIFFITH FOR ENERGY AND COMMERCE COMMITTEE

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The members of Alabama’s Republican congressional delegation today made the following statements on Congressman Parker Griffith’s recommendation by the Republican Steering Committee for an appointment to the powerful House Committee on Energy and Commerce, making him the only freshman member of the entire House of Representatives to be appointed to this Committee.

Once appointed, Dr. Griffith will be the only member of the Alabama House delegation on the committee and is the first congressman from the state to serve on the panel in almost two decades. The most recent Alabama House members to serve on the Energy and Commerce Committee were Rep. Claude Harris (D-AL), who served on the Committee from 1991-1992 and Rep. Sonny Callahan (R-AL), who served on the Committee from 1987-1992. Since 1947, there has only been one Republican Alabama Congressman to serve on the committee until now.

Congressman Mike Rogers (AL-03) said, “It is great news that after 18 years Alabama will again have a seat at the table on this top House Committee, and know this assignment will help Parker to continue being a strong advocate for the best interests of the folks of the Fifth District and the entire state.”

Congressman Spencer Bachus (AL-06), a member of the Steering Committee said, “Congressman Griffith will provide Alabama with a strong voice on a committee which deals with issues vital to the people of our state.  Our delegation looks forward to working with him as he assumes this important responsibility.”
